Aalst

Aalst, the biggest carnival city of Belgium, is situated at the River Dender. The city has a lot to offer and certainly worth the trip!

The annual Carnival festivities start the Sunday before Ash Wednesday and go on for three days. On Sunday u can admire the big carnival parade, with over 200 floats.

Furthermore the city is known for its hop and onion culture, two regional products which the local chefs love to use. The inhabitants of Aalst wear their nickname ‘de Ajuinen’ (the onions) with pride.

Culture lovers find their way in Aals as well. They can enjoy the many beautiful churches, the béguinage, the house of council with the belfry, the stock exchange of Amsterdam and Terlinden Castle. You are more of a nature lover and prefer the outdoors? Go for one of the biking trips through Aalst! For example the hop tour which will guide you through one of the richest hop regions of Europe.
